Suominen Sinikka

Dr Sinikka Suominen is an Adjunct Professor and Chief of Department at the Plastic Surgery Department of the Helsinki University Hospital.
She completed her medical training in Helsinki, specializing both in General surgery and Plastic Surgery. She defended her PhD thesis on “Complications in Free Flap Surgery” 1997, did a Microsurgery Fellowship at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taiwan 1999-2000 and was appointed as Adjunct Professor in Helsinki University 2007.
She has been both President of the Finnish (2007-10) and Scandinavian (2010-12) Associations of Plastic Surgeons, member of EURAPS Exco and the Treasurer of ESPRAS (2010-14). She is a founding member of the Pyrenean workshop on Plastic Surgery. She is one of the founders of the International Master’s Degree in Reconstructive Microsurgery program (Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona) and its co-director since 2009. She has been member of the WSRM exco since 2019, served as historian 2022-24, as the first chair of Women in Microsurgery committee 22-24, and is currently the general secretary of EFSM, the European Federation of Societies for Microsurgery 2024-.
Her main fields of interests are Breast reconstruction, Lymphedema and supermicrosurgery, Facial paralysis, Head and Neck Surgery and Genital reconstruction. She has contributed on 18 book chapters, 59 original articles, 9 review articles and given more than 150 invited international lectures.
She feels we have an obligation to our patients to continuously develop our surgical techniques and search for better solutions. She is enthusiastic about new technologies and especially robotic microsurgery.
